Is Apple Silently Developing Its Metaverse Platform Version?

Apple, the technology and communications company may be silently working on its metaverse platform version. The recent job openings in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are an indication that the technology giant is poised for entry into the world of the metaverse. One of the standout job openings mentions engineers experienced in the development of a "3D mixed-reality world," for the Technology Development Group, the virtual reality division of the company.

Apple’s Metaverse Version of ‘Horizon Worlds’

Apple posted a set of new job openings on Nov. 13, indicating the company’s perspective toward the metaverse. Bloomberg reports that the company is currently searching for engineers to develop content for its new VR headset. The headset reportedly will have high-definition displays, a set of more than 10 cameras, and Apple’s latest M2 chip, which is considered one of the quickest in the industry.

One of the standout job openings looks for engineers with the knowledge to develop a 3D mixed-reality world. Industry experts conclude that Apple is already working on its version of a metaverse platform similar to Meta’s Horizon Worlds, where users can meet, interact, and build their world.

The job openings also specify that engineers will "build tools and frameworks to enable connected experiences in a 3D mixed-reality world." Another job opening calls for engineers to build a 3D video platform for viewing the content in virtual reality hardware.

Technavio’s report on the future of the metaverse in entertainment also predicts the rise of such experiences as a trend in the coming years, fueling the growth of the interactive film industry.

Apple’s Metaverse Apprehension

The company and its executives have been apprehensive about calling the virtual experiences that are currently known as the metaverse, ‘metaverse.’ Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, believes that the term is too ambiguous and can be interpreted in many ways.

Cook told the Bright publication:

"It’s always important to me that people have a good understanding of what something is all about, and I’m not sure the average person can tell you what the metaverse is all about."

In contrast, Cook is a big believer in AR and what it might bring for adopters of the technology, describing it as "a profound technology that will affect everything."

The metaverse puzzle continues as Apple locks the horn with Meta for a long battle ahead. Please post your comments.
