Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Calls Metaverse Technology "Game-Changing"
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, calls the metaverse game-changing and discusses the larger impact of technology on the future of mankind. In a conversation with Klaus Schwab, chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Nadella disclosed that the sense of presence achieved while interacting using metaverse technology is "game-changing."
Nadella Highlights the Benefits of Metaverse Technology
Satya
Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, affirms his support for the metaverse, citing its
potential to bring people together compared to other, less interactive
technologies. In his conversation with
Klaus Shwab, chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Nadella highlighted
the benefits of the technology.
Nadella
stated:
"For
me, the thing that is most game-changing for this particular technology is the
sense of presence, which is when you are even virtually
interacting."
While
COVID-19 forced people to adapt to video calls, the implementation of more
immersive technologies is "a very natural extension of it," according
to Nadella. However, Nadella is looking forward to the real impact of the
metaverse and other technologies currently being developed on society at large.
A Virtual Replica of Davos in the Metaverse
It
has been recently revealed that
Microsoft is one of the partners of the WEF in the development of the Global
Collaboration Village, a virtual replica of Davos in the metaverse. The primary
objective of the digital world is to provide a platform for leaders from all
over the world to be in constant conversation on policies and world issues. Almost an extension of the meetings at Davos, usually scheduled over a week,
into a constant event in the metaverse.
Already
70 to 80 companies are working behind the initiative, using the metaverse
component Mesh, which works in tandem with teams and a team meeting application
from Microsoft. Nadella is excited about the possibilities of the platform. He
stated,
"Using
the metaverse technology and immersive experiences to bring the world together
for community presence action is absolutely needed."
Microsoft
has actively invested in metaverse-related initiatives, moving resources to
link its technology stack to enhance digital worlds. The company announced in October that it was working on adapting its cloud platform to be used in
metaverse applications.
However,
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in a recent
Reddit Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) session that he currently prefers artificial
intelligence (AI) technology over Web3 and metaverse technologies. Microsoft is
considering investing
USD 10 billion in funding for Openai, the creators of GPT-3 (ChatGPT).
