Miss Universe El Salvador Walks the Ramp in Bitcoin-Inspired Costume
The Miss Universe contestant from El Salvador this year surprised viewers with the bitcoin outfit as her national costume. Bitcoin is the legal tender in El Salvador, besides the US dollar. The Salvadoran legislative assembly has passed the new digital assets regulatory framework for issuing the long-awaited bitcoin-backed Volcano bonds.
Bitcoin in Miss Universe National Costume Show
The
Miss Universe 2023 contestant from El Salvador, Alejandra Guajardo, took the
viewers by surprise on Wednesday night with her choice of costume. Guajardo
walked the ramp in the 71st Miss Universe National Costume Show wearing a costume
representing "the evolution of the Salvadoran currency," the Miss
Universe El Salvador official Instagram account described, adding that the
outfit has been designed by Francisco Guerrero.
The
national costume for Miss El Salvador features cacao beans, the colón, the US
dollar, and the bitcoin. Cacao beans were
originally used as the
currency of El Salvador. The colón became the official currency of El Salvador
in 1892, and it was replaced by the US dollar in January 2001. The predominant colors of the costume are gold, silver, and bronze.
Bitcoin-backed Volcano Bonds
Bitcoin
is the legal tender in El Salvador, besides the US dollar. El Salvador is the
first country in the world to declare the largest cryptocurrency as legal
tender in September 2021. Led by the pro-bitcoin president Nayib Bukele, the
country has purchased thousands
of BTC for its
treasury. In November last year, Bukele announced that his country would buy
bitcoin every day.
The
Salvadoran legislative assembly passed the digital asset issuance law on
Wednesday, which was proposed last November. It includes a new regulatory
framework for the issuance of bitcoin-backed Volcano bonds. "The new
digital asset regulatory framework paves the way for its much anticipated
Volcano token issuance," according to Bitfinex, which will be a technology provider
for the nation’s Volcano token.
