Samsung to Enter the Metaverse VR Headset Market

Samsung, the Korean mobile company, has announced that it will soon enter the metaverse and the VR (virtual reality) headset market. The company has announced that it is already working on "extended reality" hardware, indicating the production of VR headsets.

TM Roh, Head of Samsung Mobile Experiences Business, confirmed that the device is in the works but did not offer a launch window for the hardware. However, he reported the association between Qualcomm, the wireless chip maker, and Google as partners. Roh told The Washington Post on February 1:

"Many different companies…have been making these announcements about different realities, so we have also been making similar preparations, no less than any others."

Roh explained that Samsung had delayed its participation in the market, stating that the market was still not ready and that other similar devices launched by competitors failed to achieve the expected success.

Metaverse Devices

Samsung joins other manufacturers that have already launched metaverse devices, such as Meta and HTC, and are planning to do so shortly, like Apple. Roh stated that Samsung’s new device will be powered by a Qualcomm chip specially designed to perform better in virtual reality applications and will use an OS powered by Google.

Samsung is determined to enter the exclusive market with innovative products as an expansion of traditional smartphones. Popular Finnish mobile phone company Nokia has predicted that metaverse technology will replace smartphones in the second half of the decade.

However, Roh believes the new devices do not represent any danger to what smartphones offer today. He stated:

"Smartphones will continue to build on the features and needs of consumers and will provide even more new experiences."

Roh also believes there can be an integration of the metaverse and smartphones to complement their experiences and develop together. Samsung’s involvement with the metaverse is well known, as the company has already invested millions in Latin American projects earlier.

The company launched its "House of Sam" experience in Decentraland in October 2022, allowing users to interact virtually with products of the company.

Earlier, Samsung also launched another metaverse experience on Roblox, called "Space Tycoon," in July 2022, for users to be part of a space station where they could build Samsung products with raw materials.
