Growing Interest in BRICS Membership, But Differences Loom Large

With more countries expressing interest in joining the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) group of developing economies, the topic of expansion takes center stage. Russian President  Vladimir Putin’s Press Secretary, Dmitry Peskov, emphasized the importance of this matter, as "near the top of the agenda," which will be addressed during the summit in Johannesburg later this month.

"This is a very important topic because we see that increasingly more countries are making statements about their intention to join this group." However, he candidly admitted that there are "nuances" among the current members regarding expansion, Peskov told reporters. He also admitted:

"Indeed, within the framework of BRICS, certain nuances exist among members on the subject of expansion, and all these nuances will certainly be discussed during the upcoming summit."

BRICS to Discuss Expansion Prospects Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Despite the enthusiasm for expansion, the Bloomberg report highlighted some challenges, revealing that China's push for rapid expansion faces opposition from India and Brazil within the BRICS framework. These expansion-related issues will be on the agenda during the summit, where the heads of state will discuss their respective positions. The Russian President is likely to attend the forum via video link.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's Press Secretary, Dmitry Peskov, highlighted the relevance of the BRICS bloc and its expansion as a key focus during the summit. Peskov emphasized the growing number of nations seeking to join the group, quoting:

"Overall, such a high level of interest in the BRICS group is indicative of the association’s great potential and growing authority, and, most importantly, of the hands-on nature of the group."

Scheduled to take place from August 22 to 24, the BRICS summit will review official applications from aspiring members. The organization aims to expand its economic and geopolitical influence on the global stage. However, the increasing number of potential members has led to concerns in the West about the alliance potentially becoming a counterweight to the US and the EU.
