Xi Jinping Calls on BRICS Nations to Collectively Mitigate AI Risks
The Chinese President Xi Jinping called for collective action among BRICS nations, to mitigate the critical challenge of artificial intelligence (AI) risks during the annual summit in South Africa. Xi emphasized the need to collaboratively standardize AI technology to ensure its secure and reliable implementation.
Xi Jinping Advocates AI Standardization at BRICS Summit
Xi Jinping underscored the importance of a joint effort to minimize the potential disruptions caused by AI advancements and laid out the vision for establishing standards that enhance AI's security and manageability at a plenary session of the BRICS summit in Johannesburg. He expressed his conviction that through collective action, the BRICS countries can pave the way for a safer AI landscape. The Russian Tass news agency quoted him, stating:
"It is necessary to jointly work on lowering the risks related to the employment of AI technology and develop the standards of its employment for making AI more secure, reliable, and manageable."
Xi also underlined the significant role of the BRICS working group in the cooperation and exchange of information on several issues related to the adoption of technologies on artificial intelligence.
BRICS leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, met in Johannesburg, South Africa for the annual summit from August 22-24, with Russian President Vladimir Putin, participating in virtual mode via video link. The heads of state of around 40 countries also attended the summit.
Call for Strengthening Collective Responsibility
During the summit, leaders deliberated various issues crucial to their nations' growth and global influence. The dialogue extended to matters such as expanding the BRICS coalition and fostering the use of local currencies in trade among member states and partners. The resonance of these discussions exemplifies the commitment to strengthening collective ties.
At the BRICS Business Forum, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao conveyed President Xi's message, remarking that the world is undergoing unprecedented changes, presenting humanity with a decisive moment. Xi's poignant statement, "We all share a huge stake of survival in a shared future," reverberated, highlighting the collective responsibility in steering these transformative times.
While AI-powered innovations, including technologies like OpenAI's ChatGPT, have ignited excitement, concerns about potential job displacement and misinformation propagation have also come to the fore. The power of AI has prompted global conversations, with Italy's regulatory concerns and China's vigilance against misinformation exemplifying the diversity of challenges to address.
